The Legend
The title hōchō (Japanese kitchen knife) masamune refers to three unusual tantō (短刀) attributed to the legendary swords smith Masamune. These unique blades were possessed of flatter edges and wider bodies very much like a kitchen knife, unlike his usual works. As of today, only a single of the original trio has been found and restored, and is currently on display at the Tokugawa Art Museum.
The Knife
Our HŌCHŌ MASAMUNE knife pays homage to the original design concept with a beautifully handcrafted tantō. The folded steel blade is 5.6 inches in length, with a brass bolster and a 4.9 inch olive wood handle and sheath. Each portion of the knife is individually hand forged by our smith using traditional Japanese techniques, right down to the materials used in its creation.
Engraving
The blade, sheath, and handle of the HŌCHŌ MASAMUNE can be engraved according to request. Simply send any designs to info@hatanosen.com with your order number.
Care
The blade of the HŌCHŌ MASAMUNE is crafted from a non-stainless high carbon steel that must be kept away from water to prevent oxidization. A layer of lacquer is applied initially upon creation in order to protect it, but this layer will eventually wear off (please do not remove this by force). The blade can be cared for using oil or a carbon steel eraser should a patina start to build up. If you wish to receive the blade without the lacquer coating, please reach out to us at info@hatanosen.com with your order number and request.
Safety
In accordance with Shopify's regulations regarding the sale of weapons, it is important to note that the HŌCHŌ MASAMUNE is NOT a weapon, but a kitchen utility knife. It can and should only be used for general purpose activities such as cutting fruits, opening packages, skinning fish, and other miscellaneous tasks. It is also perfect for display purposes!
Important Information
Please note that the design of the HŌCHŌ MASAMUNE has been changed since the taking of these pictures. While still possessed of a wooden handle and sheath, the shape of the blade and some of the hardware has seen minor changes at the discretion of the smith.
We are working to have the pictures updated, but this disclaimer will stay up until this change is effected. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns!
