The Legend
Mizuchi (蛟) is a legendary water deity and river dragon of Japanese mythology, first appearing in the Nihon Shoki. Unlike the celestial dragons that roam the heavens, the Mizuchi is a master of the depths, a serpentine spirit that dwells in the sacred, swirling currents of ancient rivers. In Japanese folklore, the Mizuchi is a guardian of the waterways, representing the raw, untamable power of the elements and the fluid grace of water in motion. It is a symbol of transformation—shifting effortlessly between a calm, mirror-like surface and a crashing, unstoppable force.
The Knife
In homage to the river dragon’s fluid grace, our Smith has forged The MIZUCHI (蛟). This piece is a masterclass in texture and movement, featuring a high-contrast folded steel blade multiple layers of traditionally forged metal. The resulting "Hada" (grain) creates a mesmerizing, wave-like pattern that is unique to every single blade, reminiscent of sunlight reflecting off a deep mountain stream.
The 4.5 inch handle is finished with a traditional Tsuka-maki (black cord wrap) over a high-friction core, ensuring the blade remains secure in the hand even in wet conditions. Each MIZUCHI set includes a custom-forged folded steel 刀 (Katana) charm on a stainless steel ball chain, serving as a reminder of the warrior's spirit that resides within this utility tool. The blade features a reinforced Tanto tip and measures approximately 5 inches in length. Each MIZUCHI also includes a hand-tooled leather sheath designed for both protection and portability. Crafted from premium hide, the sheath features a reinforced belt loop, allowing it to be securely attached to a belt, rucksack, or other travel accessories.
Care
The blade of the MIZUCHI is crafted from a non-stainless high carbon steel that must be kept away from water to prevent oxidization. A layer of lacquer is applied initially upon creation in order to protect it, but this layer will eventually wear off (please do not remove this by force). The blade can be cared for using oil or a carbon steel eraser should a patina start to build up. Safety
In accordance with Shopify's regulations regarding the sale of weapons, it is important to note that the MIZUCHI is NOT a weapon, but a utility knife.
