The Legend
Buffalo horn has a long and storied history in Japan, dating back centuries to the time of the samurai. One of its most famous uses was in the art of sword making where it was most commonly used in the creation of the koiguchi (鯉口), or the mouth of the sheath.
The koiguchi had to be both sturdy and flexible, able to withstand the rigors of use and protect the blade of the sword from damage. Due to its durability, strength, and resistance to moisture, buffalo horn was the ideal material for this purpose.
In addition to its use in sword making, buffalo horn was also widely used in a variety of other traditional Japanese crafts, including combs, chopsticks, and other small items. Its natural patterns and hues made it a popular material for decorative and ornamental purposes, as well as creating a sense of connection to the natural world that was especially valued in Japanese culture.
Today, buffalo horn remains a symbol of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and artistry, a testament to the country's rich cultural heritage and enduring legacy of innovation and creativity.
